The Outward Disciplines

January 17, 2011

The outward disciplines.  So termed because they are easily seen by others.

Last week we examined the inward disciplines, those habits and practices that lay a solid foundation for our pursuit of deeper intimacy with the Lord.   As we invest ourselves into those disciplines that are inward the results will often be evident in the disciplines that are outward.

Which of these outward disciplines are you most challenged by?  Why?

I feel like I have to wrestle with life to experience solitude … which is probably why the Lord drew my attention to it for this week. Have been learning and living it …

Right now, I would say Solitude because I have two young kids. 4 years old and 3 months old. But I think the majority of the time is because my mind can not stop thinking. I need to quite my head and stay still.

Another problem is Submission. I have gotten better with it when it comes to my husband. However, I am still fighting it. I am still, sometimes, not happy about the decisions he makes for this family. I am trying to start trusting him more in the decisions for this family.

Hmmm… probably solitude and simplicity. I start my day off early in solitude, but lately the Littles have been waking up into my prayer/study time. And as for simplicity — I’m Queen of Making things Harder! I could use a good lesson on keeping things simple.

Oh My! which one….Simplicity is probably the hardest. I tend to always make my life complicated and overbooked. Service is probably the easiest for me.

Looking forward to this weeks post.

These are all disciplines I so desire to hold and exude with God’s power through me. My theme for the year is “humble servitude,” so that delves into both submission and service.

I’m really loving (and thankful for) these posts this month. Looking forward to studying these outward disciplines this week!
